exhaust

Post by rustyrescue »

our exhaust is scabby from sitting but very solid so given a good clean and paint should be just fine. The back box is a single pipe so def. not standard, the middle box is small and like a curved bomb style. The downpipes are twin and quite long. I can find no pictures in my manuals of a standard system but wondered if it could be an aftermarket performance one.
What did a standard FB series 2 manifold/downpipe look like?
I will try and picture ours when I get the car in the air to remove fuel tank.

That is an aftermarket Janspeed system. The back boxes are quite substantial items and do a reasonable job. The resonator is prone to failure as it is fiberglass packed. The system gets louder with age as the fiberglass packing in the resonator breaks down. Having said that, I ran a system for years and got on with it fine.

Weak point is the 2 into 1 collector. Exhaust systems on a rotary engine get incredibly hot and the constant heat cycling takes it's toll eventually.

I might still have a back box or two sitting around somewhere. What components are you looking for?

Dave is spot on - I can also confirm it's the Janspeed exhaust system, same as I have in KIMI 1, with Janspeed clearly visible on my chrome tail pipe. Plus I bought a spare (new, old stock) Janspeed manifold and it's identical to the one I have, and the one in your photo.
KIMI 1 : 1st Gen, "hybrid" 1983 silver S2 running gear in a 1985 S3 shell, SORN'd, long term resto project
KIMI 2 : 1st Gen, 1983 silver S2 - now sold to Ian Mothersole on here.
KIMI 3 : 1st Gen, 1983 red S3
Plus a 2004 Full Bridgeported RX-8

cool, thanks. I did suspect Janspeed. I had a janspeed system on an MGB circa 1984 ;0) with weber 45, stage 2 head etc.
I dont think I need anything for the exhaust, it all looks sound and no blows.
The same can't be said for the fuel gauge sender...see my other thread.

Hi Dave, the back box on my Elford has been welded and is a bit noisy. I have been trying to track down a back box, if you have one to sell?
