yes, snagging!! I think I will try and set the 2 screws about where I would expect to find them, and then teak the butterfly stop screw to get an idle. After which I can tune the two screws again.
The fact I need to screw the mixture right in and the air right out seems to infer there is not enough air getting through the butterflies with throttle shut, it must get some air through those butterflies at idle because they are set with a small gap.

Having flooded it good and proper having fitted the next carb I have now got it starting warm brilliant, idling lovely and sounding good in workshop.

Using my reasonably accurate old Gunson co meter it can not be made to idle nicely at the specified low reading of 0.50%, i is higher but I figure this is only for idling emissions and as soon as the pedal is pressed it is governed by the jets!

I will try a proper cold start over the coming days, having flooded it I had to clear it out and splutter it in to life! smoking!

If that is good time for a gentle test under load in the hope it is better than last time :D

Well, it has pulled well in all gears...even reverse! nearing mot!! I have a pesky working carb now. I think one barrel fuel supply may be blocked/partially blocked on the cars original . I cleaned everything but it was manky after 20 years laid up so I will go through it again and see if I can find the issue.
My guess first barrel on one of the rotors.
Its running cooler too.....another sign it was lean when opened above idle.

Took the car for a drive of 8 or 9 miles yesterday, went well, pulled well, takes off at circa 5000rpm when 2nd barrels come into play.
It now sports a Carter fuel pump, big high flow pre filter with removable and cleanable element
Up front we have a pressure regulator and filter running dead head currently though my intention having proved the fuel supply seems to have sorted the remaining niggle is to run a fuel bypass with a regulator on that to regulate the pressure down and give less stress on the pump. yay yay yay

thank you both, and for the various people offering help along the way. It is as usual just a matter of working through things when it has been idle for so long....I will watch the cooling to check the electric fan/thermo switch is up to the job maybe wiring a tell tale light in the car so it is known when it cycles on if moving. Perhaps an over ride switch too. It is wired so it runs directly off the battery and cools the engine bay after turning off should it be that warm and seems to stop not many minutes after.
Currently we still have the OMP as standard which kind of worries me, I know when removed people tend to run premix at 100:1 but I am not sure whether to go premix or a 2 stroke oil feed to the OMP.
In the meantime will it over do it if I add perhaps 200:1 premix and leave the OMP running?

I run 4ml of premix per litre of petrol when I have a functioning OMP.

I run 10ml of premix per litre of petrol when I have no OMP.

I use Exol Optima 2t as its good spec/good price and buy it off ebay. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/272573586948 ... BM2Mfu6sJh

you can also get castrol power 1 racing 2t oil, nice and convenient that you can get it in halfords, but only in 1L bottles, it has a nice squirty cap so you don't need a little funnel, and a scale on the side, but its much more expensive and not quite as good specs. I have an old bottle that I keep in the car, and re fill it with exol.

Also on the oil subject I run valvolene VR1.
