Fuel Tank Leaking

As we all know, there has always been a basic problem with the fuel storage tank on the FB RX7. It is underslung at the rear of the vehicle and despite the best efforts of the designers with front and side guard plates to protect the tank from objects being thrown up along with water spray playing it's own tricks, the upper and rearward sections of the tank succomb to the inevitable corrossion through the years.
In days gone by the manufacturers ceased fabrication of these tanks and therefore the availability of replacement tanks has declined through the decades with perhaps only a handful of these units remaining on dusty shelves somewhere in the abyss. There are perhaps a few vehicles being driven with minor leakage problems (some repaired and some remain untouched) whilst some vehicles have been SORN'd as there are no easy solutions to make good the defective tank(s) economically and relining these is very expensive option.

Well whilst searching the internet I came across 2 products being promoted by the manufacturers of POR 15 materials -
i) Fuel Tank Sealer High Performance Rust Prevention (236ml tin) @ a reasonable cost say £11 + P&P
ii) Black POR Patch (118ml tube) Seam/Hole Filler - this being a new product is a thicker version of the world-famous POR 15 and is totally impervious to fuels and slovents - again @ a very reasonable cost sat £14 + P&P

Between the two of these products, it could well be a cheaper solution of having to 'sling out' the old tank and replace or improvise with a modified unit from elsewhere?

Black POR patch is worth knowing about as the tank pin holes are readily spotted once the tank's out.

Ian what are you going to do to your new tank before you fit it, to try to stop this happening in the future.

I really must get mine out and have a look at it before it actually begins to leak....

Mine is already leaking. In fact I hit it with a hammer the other day and bits fell off it.

not much really... they tend to rust from the inside out due to the cars spending lots of time stood about unused... condensation on the roof of the tank rots them out.
Outside, they have a rubberised protective coating on the bottom half as far up as the seam and then paint on the top...
I might por15 the top half to help increase the protection.
If they last 25 years, that'll make me 71 by the time it springs a leak and I'll have more time on my hands then to deal with it!

Breaks down, crying.....and I'll be in my 90's......Boo Hoo. More than a tank leak to worry about then methinks.
