Well, without looking, my only experience with these was when I lumped a couple of S3 FB and FC T2 props onto the counter at the propshaft place and asked for some cut and shut jobs done for Tim's and my conversions - The guy mentioned that the UJs were not replaceable but that the UJs looked 'ok'.

Now, I dont know if he was telling the truth, I was severly hung over and wanting to be anywhere but there, but there was no evidence of circlips holding them in, and only I recall seeing the edges punched instead.

So my gut feeling is no, but if they were unpunched and levered out - maybe?

Reading my Haynes it says that they are replaceable, but looking in the Black Dragon cat they only list UJs for model years 79 to 82 so maybe the S3 ones are not relpaceable..... the plot thickens.

Send me your registration number and I will see if they list a replacement UJ part number.

(or you could test out your local Unipart store... where are you?)

First, I should have guessed what your registration number was, shouldn't I.....

Just spoke to our Oxford branch.

The plot thickens. For your registration number our "Autopart" Catalog system does not show a listing for UJ's, Presumably because it is an S3.

The MAM Autopart computer system is probably the "brand leader" of parts catalogs in the UK, with over 3,500 vehicle parts distributors using it for part identification. However it is only as good as the database behind it (which is run in Liverpool by the way, and went down a couple of months ago because somebody set fire to the BT Telephone exchange that served it....) and for these 30 year old vehicles the data they got from Mazda etc. is often limited. Normally the system would give you an Autopart reference (maybe the Manufacturers reference but not always...) which would then be cross referenced to a list of "suppliers" part numbers to select to order it in - which obviously doesn't work if nothing is listed....

However theycan go "through" this to the actual suppliers databases - in this case Blueprint - and search there. This is where you need someone who knows his stuff and takes an interest....

Blueprint show their part number ADM53903 as fitting all RX7's from 79 to 85.

So maybe.

Unipart branches are normally open 8:00 to 5.00 and Saturday mornings till 12:00. Give them a ring - see if they are helpful. And if they are not, give them a ring the following afternoon when someone else is on...

The best I have come across is Andy at Loughborough (01509 213241 - tell him john-from-cowley-with-a-red-lexus recommended him...) but that is not much good if you don't live in the Midlands.

Thanks John, Ian has said he will take a look at his spare shaft, to see if they are the type UJ that can be replaced, ie has circlips. I will wait until I hear from before I order any.

Cool.

They are in any case used to "wrong" spares being returned - parts identification is not an exact science even on modern cars.

But who wants the bother if it isn't going to work...
