Re: Keith's red S3 (was James's)

Ive never liked the omp set-up and recently my omp started to leak so I decided to have a look at modifying it. I have a spare pump so decided to pull it to bits to see how it worked.
Image

With the pump in bits I could see how it worked and I could also see where it took the engine oil into the pump, after a bit of studying I worked out that by drilling and tapping the end plate and blanking the original oil feed hole I could feed oil to the pump from a seperate reservior.

Now all back together and ready for test.

I cobbled together a test rig with a battery drill to spin the pump and to my suprise it seemed to work fine :D
Image

Now I knew it was working I splashed out on an e-bay special polished aluminium header tank, some silicone tubing and some heat proof sleeving to go over the tubing as it is quite close to the exhaust. It was all fitted in about 15 mins and the tank filled with 2 stroke oil. Now feeling quite smug

That's 2 strokes of purest genius Keith.
Solves the problem with the OMP of 'Is it?', 'Isn't it?'

Presume you can just check the level in the header and see that the OMP is doing it's stuff.

that's a cool mod..... is there any way to fit the oil tank with a level warning like the rad has?

Ive been thinking about this, don't see any reason why not, just need to find a suitable sender.
There must be some unused light fittings in the clocks to use as a warning light ?

yes,
use the useless and pointless 'headlights raising' telltale .... I think it's on the far right of the warning lights?
I've got a spare level sender out of a headlight washer tank... I wonder if you could mod that and somehow fix it though the cap? I'll bring it to RRG if you want to take it apart and see if you can use any of it to lash up a level sensor..... unless you could somehow use a rad level sensor :?

Or just fit a sight glass?

That is a superb mod, Keith. I've been meaning to get one of those Rotary Aviation spacer block things for ages, but this looks just as neat but even better, DIY. How did you block off the oil feed from the block though? Am I being dense and missing the obvious?

I put a blob of chemical metal in the hole in the pump and made a new gasket that covers the hole. I'd like to get a vertical level sender to put in the filler cap if I can to save drilling holes in the reservior.

I'd also run a clear/translucent oil resovoir that's easy to see and check. Your update is working under all conditions?

At the moment I'm running the pump at maximum all the time, it doesn't seem to smoke alot but it is most certainly using 2 stroke oil, still keeping a close eye on everything while testing.

So you get more from the tasty smell of the.....?... :D
The levelarm of my nikki is shimmed a little but i think i wouldn't need it. The 2 stroke lubrication is a lot better, you can drive some distance without engine fault so your OMP doesn't work.
I take Mobil 1 two Stroke racing and rev the fine balanced engine to 8500-9000 U/min without problems.
Your System is missing the system oil pressure, it must work with Gravitation, not sure you can get in trouble with it.
