S3 FB steering wheel able to move in and out :(
Hey guys,
So im getting closer to drive the fb and im pytting back all the small interior pieces that weren’t on and had to replace the steering wheel boss as the original one had its splines flattend and just wasn’t good at all.
So installed it last night and was sitting on the drivers seat when I pulled on the wheel and the whole top half of the steering shaft come out 1-2” !! I know the car has been fully stripped out and bare metal resto but just wanted to see if anyone knew whats causing this or what a fix is..
Cheers

Hi Damon,
there are the two plastic fuse broken. The steering column assembly should push together, if there is an accident
Think you have to dismantling the steering column assembly to get repair it. Have to take a dismantling tool to change the steering wheel not the hammer because it is a conus bound.

Do you know if you can get these from mazda to replace? i have seen some post on rx7club about drilling through the shaft and putting a 7mm alloy rivet - but would rather do it factory way if i can..

I have done the Re-speed conversion to my car. There is a tread here if you want to look at the pictures.
On that kit they include a aluminium bar to make rivets of.
After a summer with some hard cornering the rivets have become a little "rattly".
I will now dismantle it again, but this time i will use rivets together with hot melt glue...
Keeping the parts warm enough to not let the glue harden when I slide the shafts into each other, and also use rivets would do the thing.
It will also keep the safety built in, as close to the factory specification as possible.

definitely do it the factory way if at all possible...... I wonder what tests the 7mm alloy rivet mod has undergone to ensure it does the job? If you're in a heavy crash and the column doesn't collapse, the consequences could be too dire to contemplate.BO0557 wrote:Do you know if you can get these from mazda to replace? i have seen some post on rx7club about drilling through the shaft and putting a 7mm alloy rivet - but would rather do it factory way if i can..

i agree ian but to be honest i cant find anything anywhere on the tinter web about how to do it factory or if the bits can be had ..
Some guys are talking about a nylon screw or bolt ?? Not sure about that either.. My brother did have s2 with the same issue but the only time it would cause an issue is when we would do big speed 2 or 3rd gear donuts when it whipped around..

You will need a complete steering colum from Mazda or put a Ali rivet in there
