Barn Find Rx7

Post by gaz1977 »

Hi, Im new to this Forum and to the Rx7.

Thought i would post some pics up of my new project.

The car has been off the road since 1994, when it was parked up by the first owner due to a growing family.

It has 40,000 miles on the clock and seems very solid. I know it runs and the brakes work but thats about it at the moment.

I dont know much about the different models so if anyone can enlighten me that would be great.

The photos are as I found the car. I wanted to get some pics up before I start work on it.

Wish me luck.

That's a fantastic find Gaz... a genuine barn find...... we often laugh on here at some of the wrecks that turn up on ebay described as a 'barn find'....... leave a car to rust at the bottom of the garden for 2 years when it fails it's mot and then 'rediscover' it and it's suddenly a barn find.
This car of yours though is the real deal and a great buy.
I've not come across this car before..... hardly surprising if it's been hidden away in a barn.....
it's a series 3 car in sunbeam silver, built in Hiroshima in 1985 and first registered in the UK on 14.02.1986.....
last tax disc ran out end of May, 1993....
from the photo, it looks as if it's still running the original air pump/ exhaust/emission control stuff...... most UK cars aren't these days..... very few left in original factory spec. ( they are a better car if you lose the factory exhaust though)
I'd definitely think about changing the clutch master and slave cylinders and barke master cylinder for new items.... cheap enough from RockAuto... they might be working now but will soon fail once you put the car back into regular use...... long layups and hydraulics never go well together!
Look forward to reading this thread!
Great score! s(c)

Thanks for the info Ian.

I Was going to start off by cleaning it....

Then change the oil, drain the petrol and buy a fire extinguisher ready for a start up.

I hope it will make a good stable mate for our other mazda.

Thanks

That's proper art, that is 8-) . There's something evocative about a gorgeous car utterly covered in crap  Wayne Carini would just push that onto the lawn exactly as it is at Pebble Beach and win some concourse award for "best new find" or something. Shame you have to clean it, really :?

Is that a Lotus Eclat or something next to it? And are those Regamasters on the MX-5?

Its a 1987 Lotus Excel, parked up at the same time with 63,000 miles on it.
Im not sure what is going to happen with the Lotus...

The wheels are Rota copies and only used on track now as I found and refurbished a set of original 15 inch BBS for it.

I was going to ask what the other car was.

Your silver one is our car's brother.....see the silver series 3 in the banner heading with the red coach line.

The last 1st generation VIN number was JMZFB131200705582. Ours came on the ship also early in 1986, we fall in the last dozen VIN Nos.
Looks like a great find.

I'll check tomorrow if your Reg rings any bells from the days of the old RX7 club(s) of the 1990's.
