Hi from Australia

Post by silva »

Hi Everyone,

After many years of admiring the Rx7, I have finally decided to purchase one. Though its not without hesitation as I wouldn't consider myself mechanically minded....but willing to learn the basics.

So basically my research has mainly centered around a popular car sales website we use here in Aus, though if anyone has any other legal means of procuring Rx7s I would love to hear it.

I have inspected one series 2 so far, and it appears to be in good condition, it only had 90,000 kms on the clock and was very original. Though engine bay was not so clean and some minor rust on the bonnet.

I continue my search, and if there are any other fellow Aussies, I would love to hear from you.

Thanks for your time

Hi, mate, plenty of antipodeans drift through here! Best of luck with your search, and I wouldn't worry about the mechanics side of stuff. They're actually pretty straightforward cars to work on once you get your head round the idea the engine works on voodoo magic

Dunno how many are going to come up on standard websites - and the ones that come up on Trading Post might be a bit suss.

Maybe put up a wanted Ad on Ausrotary - bound to get someone looking to move a car on, and the best thing about that is if they are members you can check their posts and possibly build thread for whats been done or what hasn't.

Thanks Lucky and RamoNZ,

Yeah apart from actually finding a decent rx7, the issue I am having is how much should I be paying for one?

The one I have seen in person was 12k, with the original 90000 kms mentioned, and it ran great, though aesthetically there were some things that needed attention.
Engine bay looked like it was rusted, but apparently the guy who was with me when I inspected it mentioned that somewhere along the line someone had used an anti-rust and had now dis-coloured some parts, has anyone heard or had experience with this?...should have taken pics.

Other than that, there is another FB with an asking price of $4500...I am in the process of trying to get an inspection but havent been able to speak to seller as yet. Photos look ok.

There is one more Series one, but he is asking nearly $14k...photos look exceptional and likely there would be nothing I would need to do, but I like the idea of getting my hands dirty. Nothing major, just minor things I would be happy working on...for now.

Thanks also for the suggestion posting the wanted ads...though I am a little unsure if I would get people trying to scam me etc.

NZ and Aus prices are a far cry from what you can get here so opinions will be mixed - we are a bit far away from the action to comment.

Buy the best one you can is good advice - even what appears pristine will eventually need something doing to it - things like oil and spark plug changes, carb tuning etc.. rust shouldn't be a major issue but keep a good eye out as a live next to the ocean could have taken its toll in hidden places.
