Easiest way to get a steering rack in an FB?

Post by Greg Cozier »

I've been searching this topic for a while.

TWR makes the GpB rack only in LHD.
Company in Canada used to offer VW rack adaptors but not strong.
Company in Oz offers mods to crossmember to fit Nissan rack but not high-ratio.

It would seem to me the most available rack would be an escort; has anyone fitted one?

FC subframe is a good bet if you got time and know how behind you.

Hi Greg,

I have carried out endless research on this topic. It can be done, but you have to fabricate mounts on the engine crossmember and it helps to maintain steering geometry by putting the rack where the original links are. i.e. behind the wheels.

From memory, (I would have to check the homolgation papers) If you want to run Historic Gp 2, then you will have to retain a steering box, as far as I know the only factory car to use a rack was the Gp B car. Competition steering boxes with a higher ratio drive are near impossible to find.

BTW did you buy Damons car ?

Nissan micra rack fits pretty well but doesn't give you tremendous lock.
