84 RX7 12A motor

Post by Foster »

I'm posting this for my son.
He recently picked up an 84 RX7, been sitting for years.
He replaced the distributor, cleaned the fuel pump, flushed the lines etc.
He hit the starter, the engine fired, ran for about 30 seconds and died. Since then he has spark but the engine wont fire.
I suggested he go through the carb, sticky float, clogged jets, all the usual suspects.
An other suggestions, for a car that has sat for years?
Do these engines have an oil pressure shut off switch, shuts the engine down if the oil pressure isn't high enough.
I don't know anything about rotary engines other than they were invented by Felix Wankel.
Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated
My thanks in advance

Clogged up carb sounds right. Maybe check fuel delivery to the carb as there is a fuel filter at the fuel pump (at the tank end)
No oil pressure interlock that I know of.

Cheers &welcome both.

Could be that it's just sucked nasty old fuel and probably rust from the tank back up thru the fuel system. It would be a good idea to fit an inline filter just before the carb until all of the nasties are out of the tank (and maybe get the tank cleaned out too).

Thanks Guys:
My son is going through fuel system from stem to stern, and he's found a carb that looks like it's in really good condition. So he's going to swap it out with the one on the car.
I'll keep you posted on how successful he is.
