Sounds exactly like mine with a faulty igniter, are you sure the S1 has no igniters? Not familiar with the older points dizzy myself.
I think the older "Points" systems used condensers that can fail causing such issues

If not already done so change the Fuel Filter underneath by Diff, & whilst there check the pump is operating properly (no dodgy connections) fuel lines not collapsing etc. Perhaps some carb cleaner (spray type) would be worth a try?

Problem sounds electrical & possibly Ignition , suggest you start with the basics ....coils/HT leads etc
Also double check all your Earth/Ground connections intermittent faults are the worst

I've got aw11 rears going in the front of my S3 and I swear I've read somewhere I need to put shock oil in the housing.
