Also check out the signal to your tachometer. I've checked the wiring diagram for your S1. Look for a yellow/green wire on the NEGATIVE terminal of the LEADING coil. That's your tacho signal. Could be something as simple as cleaning the connector on that yellow/green wire. This contradicts my previo...

Do you have a timing light? This is the easiest way to set the ignition timing. You don't need to remove the distributor! Haynes manual has a very clear diagram and instructions on how to adjust the timing. Connect your timing light to leading plug wire on FRONT rotor. Loosen the adjusting screw and...

Tachometer gets signal from the trailing coil. Yellow wire / green stripe I think. This covers all models '79 thru '85. If you haven't already done so, check all of your plug wires.
