Have you checked for play in the water pump?

How tight are you doing the belt?

i had a double pulley & new belts fitted by powergains 5 months ago they also checked the water pump with no play, water temps never rises pass 30% on the gauge! it only makes the grinding noise for a couple of seconds when i start it up from warm/hot @ 1st i thought it was the broken old alternator but its the same with the new one, is there some sort of adjustment that can b done to fix it??? cheers

Do you still have the hot start assist connected up? Acctuator unit is mounted on LH strut tower and connects via a long cable to the carb. Opens the throttle a little to assist hot starting. Many have stopped working now or been removed completely.

Get someone to start the car from hot and watch the acctuator. A tiny electric motor pulls the cable back for a short burst, that could be the noise you are hearing? If it only happens when hot, that's my best guess.

hi dave yes I still have that & I thought that was part of the choke! its sounds like a crunching/grinding noise when ur engines on & u try to start it is the best way I can describe it & im sure its the alternator crunching/grinding on the flywheel! cheers

Do you mean the starter motor Mick?

The alternator isn't near the flywheel.
