KIMI - Series 2/3 Hybrid

Post by Casey »

I thought it was about time I started a thread up on here about KIMI, given she has been with the Rotary Preservation Mob (RPM) for almost exactly one year now. I've opened up a photobucket account to host some pics so will add to this thread and bring things up to date as and when I get a few moments.

KIMI is a Series 2 1983 Silver 1st Gen with 1985 bodyshell. She had been owned from new by John Odd, a former MRC member. Sadly, John passed away in early 2011 and his car was put up for sale by his widow. "Codge" on here, who didn't live too far from the car's location, kindly offered to take a look before we agreed to proceed with the purchase. Dave gave a very thorough report and some pictures which convinced us this was a good basis for an RPM "Project". The car was transported down from Yorkshire on 29th March 2011 and now sits in my double garage, alongside my RX-8 in Colchester. The car had an MOT until 23rd March 2011, but had been on SORN for a year or so, due to John Odd's illness.

The car's bodywork was generally in very good condition, with just surface rust in a few places. There does not appear to be any need for welding work as the main structure appears solid. As far as we can tell, John bought a "C" Reg S3 in 1995 and arranged for the S2 running gear to be transplanted into the bodyshell of the "donor" S3, reasons unknown.

The engine ran well but, due to the SORN and no MOT, we were only able to move the car a short distance in 1st and reverse, but all seemed well. The brakes were binding a bit, probably due to lack of use, but there were NEW pads in place all round. The wheelrims are in a very poor state, but we also have a spare set of rims with the car which look far better. We inherited a different brand of tyre on each corner too..... :shock:

The car is to be shared with 3 other RPM & MRC members; Seanp, Will66 and Hypothermia. Our initial strategy was to clean the car up from a year's worth of grime, do a full mechanical check and service, get a fresh MOT and then maybe get her onto a ramp to deal with the underside surface rust before it takes hold.

The project started on 2nd April 2011 when 3 of us; I, Will66 and Seanp spent 4-5 hours cleaning her inside and out, plus a quick cleanup in the engine bay. We took out the back seats to give them a thorough clean and inspect around the inside of the wheel arches. Thankfully, there was only a small trace of rust on the nearside arch, the offside looked like it just left the factory!

A few pictures after the first wash, no claying or waxing at this point......that's Will66 in his Navy issue overalls :D

I can't see the pics, but that may be my fault :?

Hullo, interesting to see this thread go up. Seanp was telling us about the project on the Car magazine photoshoot a while back. Nice to see another car being rescued by sympathetic types :) You all have RX-8s "normally" then, yeah?

Yeah, we all got the rotary bug through owning RX-8's. We kept seeing 1st Gens being broken and wanted to save a piece of history that really kick-started the success story of RX-7's and the RX-8. I'm just hoping an RX-9 will see the light of day, and not an electric hybrid pleeeeaaaase Mazda........ :shock:

I really love the raw way she handles, the simplicity under the engine bay, the gorgeous sound and the "kick" of the 2nd carb :D

It'll be a long haul to bring her up to a good standard, but we suceeded in our aim of getting her to Rotorstock last year, and Will66 even took her out on the sprint circuit, which was awesome to witness. No firm plans for this year, but I'm sure we'd all want her back at Santa Pod in August again.

Well, it's taking a lot longer than I'd hoped to get Kimi back on the road. Progress is slow, but I'm not setting myself a schedule as I know I'll fail to meet it :D

She's safely dry stored in my garage; work has got in the way of any significant progress in the last 2 years. However, I hope that is about to change as I'm in the process of shutting down my business and retiring! As a result, I've been able to spend the first significant "stint" on the car for about a year. Derusted the back axle, then the full POR15 treatment; "Marine Clean", "Metal Ready", POR15 Black, followed by POR15 Chassis black. Looking a lot better.

Sorry photos in first post don't show, but here is my Flickr album of photos of history and work to date;

Thx Thomas - yes there is some rust inside and it's on the list for treatment. It doesn't look too bad, so hopefully treatment, rather than welding will be all that's needed.

:D Feel free to browse through my other Flickr albums if you like. Much like an Social Media forum, it has a mix of stuff on there.

Advice needed - I'm refurbing the entire rear underside of my car and need, ideally to replace both these damaged bits. Anyone got a rear lower suspension arm (wihtout the kink :D ) or a Watt's link with two intact fixing studs (not one with thread sheared :oops: ) and the other with a seized metal bush :D Or best place to source (Tim at RX- Motors? Someone closer to Colchester?).

Sadly, life (and 2 other rotaries) has severely impaired my progress on getting KIMI back on the road. However, she is stored in my garage and I have been making very slow progress with getting the back end in good shape.

Though tit was time to bring this topic up to date;

Rear end stripped and full POR15 treatment to 80% of the area.
Fuel tank out and checked. Outside rust stripped and repainted. Faulty ender fixed.
Axle rust treated and POR15 coated.
Calipers refurbished.
New hard brake lines.
Racing Beat springs ready to fit.
New dampers, ready to fit.
All suspension arms stripped and Energy Suspension bushes installed.
New fuel lines.
Stainless stell exhust ready to fit.

It's only taken 13 years since I took her off the road!!

This was the start, in 2012:
